Grab a bid from a few nearby places, then after laughing at the price s ee how much it costs to do the work myself.
That $3000 quote above is for some custom work on my company flatbed. I’ve done about 75% of the work already after turning down the fab shop, and my materials cost is at $400. Should stay well under $1000 by the end.
Next up is a minor bathroom remodel. New tub, vanity, sink, paint, modernize plumbing, and maybe some flooring if I can get away with laying something over the tiles that I have. Quote for that was $23 k.

So you are expecting your material cost to me about $1,000 when complete? Or is it $400 plus your time to get to $1,000?
Their material s cost was $1,750, and they had to be right the first time . . . with some mark-up. If yours was $1,000, then I think they are not far off in terms of estimation of materials, labor and profit, at $2,7 00 before tax.
B ut you have run a business, so I assume that I’m interpreting it incorrectly, and it really is wildly different, even accounting for labor.

I’m guessing final materials cost will run about $750. That’s a hefty upcharge, but I’ve noticed they’re likely to order something in bulk and charge you for all of it, despite only listing the necessary amount of product on the invoice.
I’m not *exaxtly* complaining about their prices. They do absolutely incredible work, and have decades of experience I lack. Their rate of $125/h is roughly what my company charges. That said... even if I put in enough hours doing the work myself to cancel out any savings, I’m still gaining valuable knowledge for the company that I can spread internally , which makes me a more valuable asset. A nd logistically, it’s so much easier to do everything at HQ then have to transport vehicles all over the place.
That's my take

Any excuse to learn fabrication when someone else is paying the bills is a good excuse. That said I miss being at a school with an actual fabrication shop.

I'm not so crazy buying my own shear, mill, brake, and lathe, now am I?

I’m sure if you really wanted to you could make that purchase pay for itself in no time at all.
What do you do for metal shaving collection? Vacuum? Magnet?

These quotes are your job security. Boss complains that you're getting expensive? Whip out those quotes for work you've done.

Haven’t finished getting mill and lathe set up. Probably sweep with a magnet and use a whisk broom - one whining motor at a time while working is enough.
The mill will likely pay for itself partly with making a part for the lathe. The brake already paid for itself making channels for a trunk.
